Louis Paris is recovering from a serious knee injury at the end of the football season. Still, he is celebrating the holidays, reaping the rewards of his leadership on and off the field.
On Friday, hours after learning he earned a spot on the Pennsylvania Football Writers Class 3A All-State team, the Scranton Prep senior quarterback received the 33rd Fiore Cesare Award and Scholarship by the Roy Davis Scranton Chapter of Officials at a ceremony at Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel Scranton.
The award and $2,000 scholarship sponsored by Peoples Security Bank and Trust are presented annually to a senior and recognize athletic ability, achievement, academic excellence, community contributions and character. It is named in honor of Cesare, the first commissioner of officials for the Scranton Chapter.
Mid Valley running back Jakob Lesher and Western Wayne running back Josh Vinton were first and second runners-up, respectively. Delaware Valley quarterback Logan Olsommer and Riverside quarterback Chase Taddonio were also finalists.
“It is a very special award for me to win,” Paris, 18, said. “It not only has to do with athletic ability, but it has to do with, you know, academics and character and what you are able to do in the community.
“I am honored that I was able to win this award.”
A three-year starter, Paris led Scranton Prep to a 31-5 record and three straight District 2 Class 3A championships.
He completed 84 of 137 passes for 1,371 yards and 12 touchdowns and had 138 carries for 1,182 yards and 17 touchdowns for the Cavaliers on the way to the Lackawanna Football Conference Division I championship and a 12-2 season.
Scranton Prep reached the PIAA quarterfinals and lost to eventual state champion Northwestern Lehigh, a game where Paris was forced to leave with an injured knee.
He has since committed to continue his academic and athletic careers at Franklin & Marshall University, earned The Times-Tribune Offensive Player of the Year award, and became the second player from Scranton Prep to win the Cesare Award, joining Kevin Holmes, the 2015 winner.
He accepted his trophy and scholarship check while walking with crutches and a smile on his face.
Paris closed out his career with 2,561 yards rushing and 45 touchdowns and 3,599 yards passing with 39 touchdowns.
“I have to give a lot of credit to my teammates and coaches,” Paris said. “Obviously, at the end of the season, it ended on a bad note with the injury. In life, you take adversity and learn from it. I am honored to win all of these awards, and I am happy to be able to share this with my teammates and coaches.”
