HARTFORD — Hartford Union High School (HUHS) senior Hailey Tomes has been named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, the school announced on Thursday.
“Hailey is an exceptional student whose dedication and determination exemplify what it means to be an Oriole,” HUHS Principal Kelly Lam said in a news release. “We are incredibly proud of her achievements and excited to see the opportunities that lie ahead for her.”
Being named a semifinalist for the National Merit Scholarship Program places Tomes among the top academic achievers nationwide, with less than 1% of students in the United States named a semifinalist each year, according to the release. The program honors the highest-scoring students in the nation on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“Hailey’s outstanding performance has now placed her in the running for the title of National Merit Finalist and the opportunity to compete for prestigious scholarship awards,” the release said.
Now, Tomes will continue in the competition for National Merit Finalist standing, which will be announced in February.
“Hartford Union High School congratulates Hailey on her incredible achievements and looks forward to celebrating her continued success,” the release said.
