Hyco Road Ruritan Club members awarded the remaining five of 16 scholarships the club presented to deserving recipients in 2025 during its Thursday, July 17, meeting.
Over the past two decades, the scholarship fund has provided more than $68,000 of scholarship funds to those who wish to further their education.
Scholarship awards of $500 each were presented to three more 2025 Frazier Pool and Ricky Pool Memorial Scholarship recipients, to one Ricky Pool Memorial Scholarship recipient and to one Build Your Dollar Scholarship recipient.
A total of 13 visitors and 27 club members attended the July scholarship presentation and dinner.
This spring, Hyco Road Ruritans sold approximately 1,200 10-pound bags of Vidalia onions that provided the funding to promote higher education through the Frazier Pool and Ricky Pool Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Formerly known as the Frazier Pool Memorial Scholarship Fund, the name of the scholarship was changed to also honor the memory of Frazier’s son, Ricky, who passed away on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022.
The late Ricky Pool gave more than 22 years of service to his community Ruritan Club, having served in numerous local club activities including year after year overseeing the ordering, transporting, delivery and distribution involved in the club’s annual Vidalia onion fundraiser that has supported scholarships. In past years, he also served on the scholarship committee to help select and present numerous recipients with the club’s annual scholarships.
Club members express appreciation to the community for supporting its recent onion sale fundraiser. The profits from these onion sales fully fund these scholarships presented annually to community scholars to assist in furthering their educations.
Receiving the remaining three Frazier and Ricky Pool Memorial Scholarships from Scholarship Committee Chairman Frank Shealy were Sarah Vernon, Ja’Kayla Lee and Olivia Seamster.
Ricky Pool’s wife, Ruth, also participated in the club’s scholarship presentations Thursday evening presenting the remaining scholarship to Lukas Newton who was selected to receive one of the five Ricky Pool Memorial Scholarship given as memorials following his passing.
In addition on Thursday night, Ruritan Club President Bob Ford presented Jaxson Elliott with the Ruritan Build Your Dollar Scholarship.
