TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWWV)— Three Terre Haute high school students were among this year’s recipients of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship.
The scholarship program, launched in 2016 by legislation in the Indiana general Assembly, awards a renewable scholarship of up to $10,000 per year up to a total of $40,000. This scholarship is given out to high-achieving high school and college students who agree to teach in an eligible Indiana school for five years.
This year a record-breaking 1,091 students applied for the scholarship and nearly 300 were awarded.
“These young Hoosiers are choosing a career of purpose and public service,” said State Rep. Bruce Borders (R-Jasonville). “They’re preparing to guide students and shape minds, and I commend their decision to teach right here in Indiana.”
Three of those nearly 300 scholarships awarded were to students in Terre Haute high schools. Brianna Higginbotham and Katin Keith from West Vigo High School and Kyleigh Moore from North Vigo High School were all recipients.
“These scholarships recognize hard work in the classroom and a commitment to teaching,” said State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute). “We’re proud of these students for taking the first step toward a rewarding career in education.”
According to State Representative Tim Yochum (R-Clinton), those that qualify for the scholarship must graduate in the top 20% of their class, earn a score in the 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT, or have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 out of a 4.0 scale.
“Teaching is one of the most important jobs, and these students are choosing to make a difference,” Yocum said. “This scholarship helps set them up for long-term success building a career and leading a classroom.”
