CARUTHERS, Calif. (FOX26) — Most families dream of sending their child to college on a full-ride scholarship. Not many do.
But one Central Valley family is living that dream – and living it twice.
It is in Jaylee Moore’s blood to be a bucket-getter; her mom, dad, and grandfather played basketball.
The 6'1" Caruthers sophomore has already won a state championship and earned six Division-I scholarship offers, including to Fresno State and Cornell.
It's all thanks to a mix of god-given ability…
"I was in the first grade, taller than my teacher."
a tireless work ethic…
"I was training on Thanksgiving morning, like 6 o'clock in the morning."
and the support of her older brother Jaeden.
"He's a big part of who I am today," Jaylee said.
Jaeden Moore was a football and basketball standout at Central Valley Christian, earning a football scholarship to Oregon, but he always made time for Jaylee.
"Just because we're athletes does not mean it's the priority in our lives," Jaeden said. "Outside of that, family is the most important thing."
Even with Jaeden now at Pitt, this special sibling bond continues to motivate Jaylee to this day. When Jaeden comes to visit, Jaylee cherishes every moment.
"He's always showing me new moves outside on our little basketball court, and he's always just pushed me," Jaylee said.
As you might imagine, raising two future D-1 college athletes has its challenges.
"It is a lot of sacrifice and you put a lot of things on hold," said mother Darlyn Cabral, "me just being the only parent available for them."
But challenges were exactly what the Moores were trained to overcome.
"We were taught to get it out the mud, and if you want to change your situation, you have to do something about it," Jaeden said.
So it's in Jaylee’s blood to get buckets – and get better.
"Her focus is on," said Caruthers girls' basketball coach Anna Almeida. "This isn't the limit."
