Warner Robins, Ga (WGXA) – The family of the late Marvin James—who retired from Northside High School after nearly two decades of service—says they are committed to keeping his legacy of giving alive.
In 2021, James passed away, leaving behind a powerful legacy rooted in leadership, service, and generosity. His wife, Genet James, and their children have since created a way to honor his memory—by giving back to students who exemplify the same values he held dear.
“His favorite verse was, ‘To whom much is given, much is required,’” Genet said. The family is now awarding scholarships in memory of Chief Marvin James, a U.S. Air Force veteran who served more than 30 years on active duty. He traveled the world during his military career and later retired from Northside High School, where he served for 17 years as an ROTC instructor. His family says he never stopped mentoring and supporting young people.
“He was always looking out for young people—always trying to help them get into the military and bring up their grades,” Genet shared.
Tamayra Benson, a 2025 Northside High School graduate, is the latest recipient of the Chief Marvin James Leadership Award. She received a $500 scholarship and is preparing to enter the U.S. Air Force herself. For her, the recognition affirms the effort she’s put into being a leader.
“I’ve been working really hard to lead others, and being able to receive that scholarship meant a lot—because it showed that what I was doing was enough,” Benson said.
She was honored for not only her leadership, but also for her academic performance and community service. Benson says she had the chance to sharpen her leadership skills during cadet leadership camp—twice—and credits her mom and stepdad for shaping her into who she is today.
“It’s motivated me to do way more than I thought I could,” she added.
The James family hopes this initiative encourages more students to lead and give back to their communities.
“I hope that they understand they can give back as well—and be proud of their accomplishments,” James said. “What we want to do is pat them on the back and say, ‘Hey, we see you. You’re doing a great job, and we want to honor you—just like my father would have.’”
Before leaving for basic training, Benson shared one final message for the James family. “I would say thank you so much for helping me become more confident and for giving me this spotlight for my leadership—because it’s really helped me in my personal life.”
WGXA News congratulates Tamayra Benson on her scholarship and wishes her continued success as she embarks on her military journey.
