The Insurance Institute of Canada (IIC) has opened the application process for the 2025 Lloyd King Scholarship.
The annual program, established in 2009, offers up to two scholarships valued at $2500 each. It is open to students pursuing full-time undergraduate studies at universities located in Atlantic Canada.
The application deadline is September 19 at 5 pm ET. The scholarship recipients will be announced in the fall.
“The Lloyd King Scholarship recognizes the hard work and impact of post-secondary students in Atlantic Canada – whether they are directly related to an insurance professional or preparing for an insurance career themselves through their own academic pursuits,” said Peter Hohman, president and CEO of the Insurance Institute of Canada.
Eligibility requirements include Canadian citizenship or permanent residency, along with residence in one of the Atlantic provinces for a minimum of five years. The program also gives initial consideration to applications from Newfoundland and Labrador, followed by those from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
Applicants must either work in the property and casualty insurance industry or be a dependent or immediate relative of someone employed in the sector. They must also be a member of an Insurance Institute in Canada or related to a member.
Candidates are required to be accepted into a full-time university degree program and registered for a full course load for the academic year. They must maintain continuous full-time studies, and the scholarship is conditional upon achieving grades consistent with past academic performance.
Selection criteria include academic achievement during high school and any post-secondary education, financial need, contributions to school or community activities, accomplishments outside of academics and indicators of academic promise.
The Lloyd King Scholarship is one of several initiatives the IIC supports to assist students with connections to the insurance industry and to promote careers within the sector.
