Insurance Institute of Canada opens Fall scholarship applications – Insurance Business America

The Insurance Institute of Canada (IIC) is reminding students and insurance professionals of several upcoming deadlines for education funding.
According to the organization, the next AIC Grant application deadline is Friday, September 19, with recipients to be announced in October. Established in 2023, the program provides up to $20,000 annually to Alberta residents who are pursuing the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP), Advanced CIP (ACIP), or Fellow CIP (FCIP) designations.
Unlike many employer sponsorships, the AIC Grant is designed for students whose workplaces do not fund insurance studies. Applicants must be members of the Insurance Institute of Northern or Southern Alberta, either hold or intend to pursue a provincial broker, agent or adjuster licence, and be enrolled in at least one CIP course. Preference is given to those progressing through introductory modules.
The program is part of efforts to support the pipeline of qualified brokers, agents and adjusters in Alberta, where the industry continues to report challenges in attracting and retaining licensed professionals. By reducing financial barriers, the grant aims to accelerate the path to licensing and strengthen the province’s insurance workforce. Earlier this year, Odelle Oxley, a student member of the Insurance Institute of Northern Alberta, was named the most recent recipient.
Meanwhile, two additional IIC scholarships have national reach. The Lloyd King Scholarship, open to Atlantic Canada residents pursuing full-time university studies, has a September 19 deadline. Ontario students can apply for the John E. Lowes Insurance Education Fund, which supports post-secondary education in insurance and risk management, with applications closing on September 26.
"The Insurance Institute is proud to offer these scholarship funds to support students who are strongly invested in insurance education at a variety of institutions across Canada, including enrolment in post-secondary studies and the Insurance Institute's programs," said Peter Hohman, president and CEO of IIC. He added that initiatives such as the AIC Grant are closely tied to the sector’s need for a larger, well-trained talent pool, particularly as experienced professionals retire and industry demand for technical expertise grows.
The Insurance Institute, which serves more than 41,000 members nationwide, provides training to over 18,000 active students annually and oversees the CIP, ACIP and FCIP designations. Full eligibility details and application forms are available on the Institute’s website.
