Inverness Cultural Heritage Council (ICHC), an arm of the Citrus County Historical Society, recently awarded three county high school students with a $1,000 scholarship each.
This year’s students who were awarded are Isabella G. Hollingsworth of Citrus High School, Hope Elizabeth Prevost of Lecanto High School and Jose Enrico Febiar of Citrus High School.
Hollingsworth was accepted to Florida Southern College and has logged 300 hours of community service. She garnered 20 thespian acting awards during her time in school and held multiple leadership positions.
She will major in marketing and public relations, and her ambition is to be a screenwriter.
Prevost, who had dual enrollment at the College of Central Florida and LHS, was accepted to the University of South Florida, where she will major in clinical psychology.
A member of the National Honor Society, she was also a member of the National Art, Science and Quill & Scroll Journalism honor societies. She held multiple leadership positions in school.
Having accumulated 250 hours of community service, Prevost became a teacher’s assistant to overcome her “fear of kids.”
Febiar was accepted to USF-Tampa and USF Judy Genshafts Honors College. At CHS, he was ranked No. 2 of 370 students. He will major in psychology.
He was president of Youth Leadership Citrus and president and founder of the Mindful Futures Club and was a member of the National Honor Society.
Febiar said a life-altering lesson in his personal life led to better understanding, empathy and personal skills necessary to make a meaningful impact in life.
“All of the awardees represent an incredible gift of understanding, willpower, commitment and a desire to not only succeed, but to give back to their respective communities their knowledge and education,” said Steve Hrycaj, chair of the Inverness Cultural Heritage Council.
Inverness Cultural Heritage Council’s sole purpose is to help and assist The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum, a 113-year-old building in the heart of Downtown Inverness and a symbol of Citrus County’s rich history and heritage.
For it to continue to survive as a vibrant center piece that locals can visit and enjoy, ICHC is tasked to also be a successful fundraising team and help give back to the active community, culture and education.
The Old Historic Courthouse is home to archives and records and three rooms on the main floor open for the public to visit: They are the 12,000-year-old History/Fossil Room with artifacts from the Chassahowitzka Springs; the 175-year-old Central Florida and County Room; plus, the ever-changing, historically significant revolving Gallery Room.
The second floor houses the beautifully restored Old Historic Courtroom. There, Elvis was famously in the building to film the last 14 minutes of “Follow That Dream.”
To keep this all going and current, ICHC, with the county, helps secure volunteers to carry out the duties of the docents, researchers and digitizers (digitizing all 125 years of the Citrus County Chronicle).
