Women’s educators group Delta Kappa Gamma, of which the local chapter is known as the Iota Chapter, recently awarded scholarships to area high school students.
One of Iota Chapter’s basic purposes is to endow scholarships to outstanding women educators. To teach is to answer a higher calling. The members of Iota Chapter chose to award the 2024 scholarships of $350 each to two young teacher education candidates.
Ansley Hatter, Casey County High School, is described by school officials and teachers as an excellent student, an active member of school organizations, and a hard worker. She is intelligent, responsible, reliable, trustworthy, a strong leader, and “wise beyond her years.” She has a kind-hearted nature and has a passion for service.
Hatter is an active member of Student Council, FCA, and FFA. She has served as a member of the yearbook staff, Class Secretary, Pep Club President, and Captain of the Cheer Team. For her academic and personal achievements, she received the Good Citizenship Award and was hired by the Board of Education as a GEAR UP peer tutor.
She plans to attend Campbellsville University, be on the cheerleading team, and pursue a degree in elementary education.
Whitley Sullivan, Wayne County High School, has worked at the Wayne County Middle School since she was 16 years old and is described by school officials and teachers as “a young lady of character”, a great leader with a strong work ethic who has a passion for teaching and serves as an “excellent role model” for her middle school students. Those who have worked with her say that she is “the best and the brightest Wayne County High School has to offer” and that she will become a Phenomenal Kentucky educator.
Sullivan excels academically as well as personally. She has made the A Honor Roll her entire school career, has maintained a perfect attendance record while serving as an eighth grade language arts GEAR UP tutor, a task organizer through the 21st Century After School Programs, and Middle School teacher’s aide. She is an active member of FCCLA (Family Career Leaders) and the WCHS Kindness Club.
Sullivan will begin by attending Somerset Community College, taking online classes while working as an aide at the middle school, and then transferring to the University of the Cumberlands to complete a degree in middle school education.
The members of the Iota Chapter are privileged to honor these two outstanding teacher education candidates at their June 1, 2024, meeting at the Burnside Branch of Pulaski County Public Library.
The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes the professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. Any teacher in the region may join the regional Iota Chapter and take part in activities.
