NEW ALBANY — Indiana University Southeast announced last week the creation of a new a scholarship for gap year students.
From what the enrollment services could find, this is the first time a scholarship for gap year students has been created in the Southern Indiana and North-Central Kentucky regions.
The scholarship will be $1,000 per year up to four years. Students will get up to $4,000 in total over the four years.
First-time students who graduated from high school up to two years before enrolling at IUS can be awarded the scholarship.
To receive the scholarship, students must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.00, maintain satisfactory academic progress once enrolled and pursue any major offered at IUS.
Wanting to offer more services to the students who choose to take time after high school before starting college, IUS’ enrollment services came up with the idea for the scholarship.
“There are a growing number of students who don’t go directly from high school to college,” said Lisa Hoffman, interim associate vice chancellor for enrollment services at IUS.
When people talk about taking a gap year, it is intentional, Hoffman added. A student may not feel ready to start college yet.
A student may have other obligations for taking a gap year such as raising enough money, going on a religious mission and more, Hoffman said.
“We want to respect that every student has a different path,” Hoffman said. “What works best for the majority of students may not work best for every student. Offering $4,000 to a student who might have gotten nothing is significant.”
This scholarship is not for transfer students. IUS has other scholarship opportunities offered for students who are transferring.
