Merchants Commercial Bank, in collaboration with the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, has announced the first recipient of the Alda Monsanto Scholarship.
The inaugural scholarship has been awarded to V’Manie Rochester, a 2025 graduate of the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School who is pursuing a degree in Finance at the University of the Virgin Islands.
Rochester demonstrated outstanding academic dedication and a clear vision for the future, according to a news release.
“I’m extremely proud and grateful to receive the Alda Monsanto Scholarship and I truly appreciate this opportunity. I have dreams of becoming a financial adviser and this scholarship will help me to become one step closer to accomplishing this goal,” he said.
The scholarship program was established by MCB to honor the late Alda Monsanto, a founding and long serving board member of MCB and Director Emeritus at CFVI.

The funds will support aspiring Virgin Islanders in achieving their educational goals while paying tribute to Monsanto’s lifelong commitment to learning, community upliftment, and financial literacy.
Awarded annually, the scholarship will benefit a student pursuing a degree in finance, economics, or a related field at an accredited institution of higher education.
“The awarding of the first Alda Monsanto Scholarship marks a meaningful milestone for CFVI,” said Dee Baecher-Brown, president of CFVI. “This scholarship honors Alda Monsanto’s extraordinary legacy by supporting a student who exemplifies her deep commitment to education, leadership, and community service.”
