The announcement was made Wednesday by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which named more than 16,000 students across the country as Semifinalists in its 71st annual program. These academically talented seniors now have the opportunity to compete for nearly $26 million in scholarships that will be awarded next spring.
To advance to the Finalist level, Coleman and Kaspar must meet several academic and extracurricular requirements over the coming months. About 95 percent of Semifinalists are expected to become Finalists, and roughly half of those will go on to earn National Merit Scholarships and the title of Merit Scholar.
Established in 1955, NMSC is a nonprofit organization that operates without government funding, relying on its own resources and support from about 300 business organizations, higher education institutions, and individual donors who share its mission of recognizing academic excellence and encouraging educational advancement.
