Three Jackson students are semifinalists in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship program.
Jackson Hole High School senior Georgiana Mueller and Jackson Hole Community School seniors Mia Nissenberg and Xander Vanier were among the more than 16,000 semifinalists, according to a press release. They will have an opportunity to continue in the 71st annual competition for some 6,930 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 million that will be offered next spring.
More than 1.3 million juniors in close to 20,000 high schools entered into the 2026 program by taking the 2024 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors.
About 95% of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship.
There is a rigorous application process to become a finalist.
Three types of scholarships will be offered in the spring. Every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 scholarships worth $2,500 that will be awarded on a state-representational basis. There are also 830 corporate-sponsored scholarships and 3,600 scholarships sponsored by colleges and universities for finalists who will attend their institutions.
