The 76-year-old professor was recently named one of four recipients of the annual Bao Son Prize for his social sciences and humanities research.
The Bao Son Prize, jointly organized by the Bao Son Education Fund of the Hanoi-based Bao Son Group – a Vietnamese conglomerate – and the Ministry of Education and Training, honors individuals or groups whose inventions or applied scientific research significantly contribute to the country.
Prof. Furura is the first foreign scientist to be honored with this award, which includes a cash prize of $120,000.
Upon receiving the award, he donated VND1 billion (approximately $39,000) to the university’s scholarship fund, continuing his longstanding commitment to supporting Vietnamese students through scholarships funded by his awards and book royalties.
Over the years, Prof. Furuta has quietly and persistently contributed to Vietnam Japan University, notably by dedicating most of his awards and book royalties to scholarships for students.
The ‘Thay [Teacher] Furuta’s scholarship,’ as it is affectionately called by teachers and students, has long been a prestigious award given to outstanding students facing special difficulties or those involved in academic and research exchanges with Japan.

In 2020, he allocated two million yen (around $14,000) from the Daido Seimei Prize, a prestigious award from the Japanese government, to support the school’s first cohort in the Japanese Studies program.
Throughout his tenure, Prof. Furuta has consistently donated the majority of his prize money and royalties to student scholarships, totaling about $27,000.
He has also called on Japanese intellectuals and businesspeople to provide financial support to the school’s students, including contributions of 1.3 million yen ($9,100) and VND155 million ($6,000) from the Azabu Fund.
Prof. Furuta is widely recognized as a leading researcher in Vietnamese studies in Japan, with expertise in Vietnam’s history and politics.
Fluent in Vietnamese, he has devoted his career to researching Vietnam.
His contributions have been acknowledged with numerous honors, including an honorary doctorate from Vietnam National University, Hanoi; the Friendship Medal from the Vietnamese State in 1980; the State Prize for Science and Technology in 2012; and the State’s Friendship Order in 2013.
Currently, besides serving as rector of the Vietnam Japan Univeristy, he is president of the Japan-Vietnam Friendship Association and the Japan Association for Vietnamese Studies.
