The Charleston Ballet received a $10,000 donation for the Jean Roberts Moran Scholarship Fund in March. The donation will help economically disadvantaged children take lessons at the American Academy Ballet.
During a March performance of BALLET.ESSENTIAL, the $10,000 donation was presented in honor of Jean Roberts Moran during an intermission. The scholarship was initially funded by donations from friends and family.
Jean Lee Roberts Moran died April 4, 2023, following an extended illness. Jean’s love for ballet began at the age of 12 when she began taking lessons under the guidance of Andre Van Damme. At just 16, she became a charter member of the newly formed Charleston Ballet. Her passion for the art form never waned. Even in her adult years, Jean remained an active participant in the Charleston Ballet community, serving as a volunteer, supporter, and dancer.
For 73 years, Jean took a weekly ballet class until the age of 85; she was the last remaining original charter member of the Charleston Ballet, still taking lessons. Her unwavering commitment to ballet-inspired countless dancers, young and old, throughout her life.
In honor of Jean, the Jean Roberts Moran Scholarship Fund has been established to provide needs-based dance scholarships for students at the American Academy Ballet in Charleston. This fund, shaped with Jean’s input, ensures her legacy lives on by supporting aspiring dancers for generations to come.
Donations can be made by check or in person to the Charleston Ballet, with the note “Jean Roberts Moran Scholarship Fund” included. Mail checks to Charleston Ballet, 100 Capitol, Suite 302, Charleston, WV 25301.
