AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – After losing their son to gun violence, one family is honoring his life by helping send high school seniors to college.
Jeremiah Duncan was shot and killed in 2020. After his death, his family created Jeremiah’s Sports Foundation.
We spoke with two scholarship recipients from Lucy C. Laney High School, who are two of seven students receiving $6,500 to fund their college endeavors.
“I feel good. I mean start a new chapter, start over from like scratch,” said scholarship recipient, Chance Bush.
For these students, new beginnings are just a week away.
Scholarship recipient, Latasia Abraham, said: “I feel blessed, accomplished, I feel like I worked hard to get here and I’m just excited.”
Abraham shared how she felt after being awarded the scholarship she wasn’t sure she’d get.
“I cried tears of joy. I was jumping up and down. I screamed because it was very unexpected. So when I got it, it was just a very happy moment for me,” she said.
The foundation is going on year four of awarding scholarships to CSRA seniors heading to college.
It’s their way of honoring Jeremiah’s legacy, who was an athlete, just like Bush.
“I grew up watching sports and a lot of my older family members played sports back in their days, so it will kind of run in the family,” he said.
The scholarship is keeping Duncan’s memory alive while helping seniors pursue their dreams.
“I want to go to college for biomedical engineering, so I want to pursue that major. My years in high school showed me a lot. It showed me not to give up,” said Abraham.
The students say they’re grateful.
“I feel good. It made me feel like I really did something good, and all them long nights finally paid off,” said Bush.
