JOETEN Daidai Foundation awarded $12,000 in scholarships to six outstanding recipients on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2025, during a presentation held in the executive conference room of Joeten Susupe, located at Joeten Shopping Center. Each recipient received $2,000 to support their college journey as they begin college this fall. The six awardees are Zhimin Jin of Marianas High School, Jia Ross Nicdao of Marianas High School, Kelly Zheng of Marianas High School, Pia Sablan Ngewakl of Kagman High School, Shoko Litulumar of Marianas High School, and Stephanie Diaz of Tinian Junior Senior High School.
The scholarships were made possible through funds raised during the Joeten Memorial Golf Classic, held in celebration of Joeten’s 75th anniversary. As the foundation’s only fundraiser — held once every five years—the tournament generated enough support to fund scholarship awards and assist other charitable organizations for the next five years. This year’s recipients were the first scholarship beneficiaries of the distributed funds.
“This year was especially competitive, as we received the highest number of applications to date and could only select six recipients from across the NMI,” said Foundation Director Patty T. Palacios. “Our board was incredibly impressed by the diverse backgrounds, achievements, and heartfelt essays submitted. They had a difficult time selecting the final recipients, as many applicants stood out for their university acceptance letters, academic honors, community involvement, and compelling personal stories.”
As part of the application process, students were asked to reflect on a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “What lies behind us and what lies beneath us are tiny maters compared to what lies within us.” In addition to their essays, applicants were required to meet academic criteria, submit a list of honors and extracurricular activities, and provide supporting documentation.
Established in 1994, the Joeten Daidai Foundation is the charitable arm of Joeten Enterprises. It was founded by the late Jose “Joeten” C. Tenorio and his wife Soledad “Daidai” Tenorio who shared a vision of giving back to the community through charitable deeds. The foundation continues to thrive thanks to the ongoing generosity of Joeten affiliates such as Saipan Stevedore Co., Saipan Shipping Co., Pacifica Insurance Underwriters, Inc. and many long-standing business partners.
