TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A Topeka non-profit is establishing a scholarship for future mental health professionals.
The Jones Project, with the help of Advisors Excel and The Ellis Foundation, has created the Jones Family Scholarship.
“The opportunity to do something truly unique that could leave a lasting impression in multiple communities is exceedingly rare,” Jones Project Executive Director Damon Parker said. “This is one of those opportunities.”
Four Kansas high school students going to an in-state institution and pursuing mental health careers will be selected for the scholarship. It will also include a bonus for any that decide to practice in Kansas after earning their degree.
Parker expressed his excitement at being able to contribute to creating more mental health access in Kansas.
“The initial mission of The Jones Project was to be the ‘tip of the spear’ in the conversation around teen mental health,” Parker said. “As I traveled the state and met face-to-face with students, counselors, and community members, I saw firsthand that access to mental health services in rural areas was a tremendous challenge. Some students have to drive two or more hours to meet face-to-face with a therapist.”
Parker says more details on the scholarship are coming soon.
