TYLER, Texas — As the Juneteenth holiday approaches, communities across East Texas are not only reflecting on freedom and heritage, but they’re also investing in the future. In Tyler, one local organization is making a difference one student at a time
The Juneteenth Association of Tyler awarded 15 scholarships Friday morning to East Texas high school students. Recipients were recognized for academics, leadership and community service.
The scholarships celebrate Juneteenth, honoring freedom and the legacy of African American ancestors.
Rosie Johnson, chair of the Scholarship Committee, said while the scholarships help students pursue higher education, the greater mission is to educate future generations about the significance of Juneteenth.
“The students are going to make a difference because Juneteenth is all about freedom, and that’s what we’re looking at, freedom. And what our ancestors and we got to remember where they came from and what they have done, and where we’re going to try to improve our lives,” Johnson said.
The Juneteenth Association of Tyler continues its mission to raise awareness about the importance of Juneteenth and the lasting impact it has on the African American community.
