The Eastern Shore Christian Businessmen’s Association recently presented a $1,000 scholarship to Haley Faith Justis of Bloxom, a recent graduate of Arcadia High School and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Scholarships are based on school, church and community activities, academic achievement, an essay on a Christian topic and an interview. Justis was chosen by a three-member committee headed by Vernon Bell that also included Rev. Sam Welch and Steve Bowers.
Justis, who finished 6th out of 146 graduates with a 4.20 GPA, will be attending the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and majoring in pre-pharmacy. In addition to taking a number of college level courses at Arcadia, including biology and calculus, Justis took welding.
In the essay she read to the ESCBA membership, Justis said Christian principles had impacted her decision making and contributed to her purpose in life since an early age when she first started attending church.
Zina Parks, youth leader and the women’s ministry leader at Bethel Baptist Church, said of Haley, “She is a very thoughtful, patient, kind, loving and compassionate young lady who not only takes care of others but excels in her school work.”
Patricia Bell, the chair of the English Department at Arcadia, wrote, “Haley is a young woman of strong character and integrity. She approaches her studies with diligence and curiosity and consistently strives for excellence.”
The ESCBA meets monthly to promote Christian principles and adherence to the highest ethical standards in all business dealings.
