Religious affairs adviser AFM Khalid Hossain on Friday said that temple-based child and mass education programme would play an important role for education of children in rural and marginalised areas.
‘Just like mosque-based programmes, temple-based programmes will also be operated with equal support. Scholarships will be provided to children of underprivileged families to facilitate their education,’ he said while speaking as the chief guest at a workshop in Khulna.
Khulna district office of the temple-based education and mass literacy programme, 6th phase, organised the workshop titled ‘The role of the temple-based child and mass education programme in achieving sustainable development goals and promoting moral education,’ at the Khulna district Shilpakala Academy auditorium.
The adviser said that temple-based education was an ancient tradition and from the ancient to modern times, places of worship had been centres for educational activities.
He mentioned that the government has already constructed temples and bathing ghats in Taherpur, Sunamganj at state expenses. The government also plans to provide financial aid to underprivileged temples.
He recommended installing solar panels in temples to conserve electricity.
Khulna deputy commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam presided over the event while Srikanta Kumar Chand, project director of the programme, Sadeq Ahmad, joint secretary of religious affairs ministry, and Md Asinuzzaman Sikder, divisional director of the Islamic Foundation Khulna, addressed as special guests.
Satyananda Dutta, trustee of the Hindu Religious Welfare Trust, delivered the welcome speech.
A concept paper was presented by Priyanka Sikder, assistant project director of the programme, at the Khulna district office.
Some 290 teachers from temple-based child and mass education centres across nine upazilas of Khulna district participated in the workshop.
In the evening, adviser Khalid Hossain also visited the Japchharia Model Madrassah in Bagharpara upazila of Jashore and attended a meeting with students and teachers.
