This year’s P.E.O. STAR Scholarship was awarded to Aaliyah Duarte, a senior at Kewanee High School. The scholarship was presented to Duarte at an awards ceremony on May 16 by Cari Haun and Suzanne Stern.
Duarte is the daughter of Carmelo and Nubia Duarte. She was recommended for the scholarship by Chapter C5 of Kewanee. Duarte plans on attending Black Hawk College where she will take part in the nursing program.
The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is a $2,500 scholarship based on excellence in leadership, extracurricular activities, community service, academics and potential for future success. The program is open to young women who are citizens or legal permanent residents of the United States or Canada and who are graduating high school seniors at the time of the application. The student must be recommended by a P.E.O. chapter.
The P.E.O. Sisterhood was founded January 21, 1869 at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. It is an international philanthropic and educational; organization which promotes educational opportunities for women. The P.E.O Sisterhood has provided over 304 million in financial assistance to more than 102,000 recipients.
