Two area high school students were recently awarded the Western Golf Association’s Chick Evans Scholarship — a full, four-year housing and tuition scholarship for golf caddies and the nation’s largest privately funded scholarship program.
Carter Munroe of Kirkwood High School and Tyler Rooney of Saint John Vianney High School will both attend the University of Missouri this fall. They join three other St. Louis area high school students as this year’s awardees.
Each caddie selected has a unique story to tell, reflecting the scholarship’s four selection criteria — a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character. The scholarship is valued at an estimated $125,000 over four years.
Currently, a record 1,130 caddies are enrolled at 24 universities across the nation as Evans Scholars, and more than 12,040 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars since the program was founded by famed Chicago amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr.
The St. Louis selection meeting was one of more than 20 meetings the Evans Scholars Foundation will hold nationwide throughout the spring. When the 2023-2024 selection meeting process is completed, an estimated 340 caddies are expected to be awarded the Evans Scholarship.
