La Crosse, Wis. – (WXOW) – Scholarships and special recognition was awarded to 10 different high school seniors representing 10 area high schools as part of an annual La Crosse Kiwanis Club event. The club has been honoring students for the past 50 years.
The 10 seniors came from 10 different area schools, each one chosen by their school teachers and staff.
“I was awarded this scholarship because my teachers recommended me,” said Erica Fechner, Holmen High School. “I was just incredibly grateful for the recognition.”
It was a surprise for Onalaska senior Nick Putz as well.
“I got a bit nervous,” Nick said. “They gave me the paper and said congratulations and I was thrown for a loop.”
Students were chosen by their school staff without any application. The Kiwanis Club asked the schools to choose a solid individual who may be involved in school, church or the community. Their goal is to honor a “good kid” who is an achiever in his or her own way and who may be overlooked for similar honors.
For Isabel Harden, the award will help her as she plans to go to college.
“I have a plan to go to St. Catherine’s in St. Paul,” she said.
For Nick, he planned to focus on technical training with plans to be an electrician.
Erica said she was headed to UW Eau Claire.
“I’d like to jumpstart my college career and study psychology and sociology to get into human services and help people,” she said.
Each student received a $750 award along with a recognition plaque and a bouquet of balloons in their school colors.
Students receiving the award came from Aquinas, Bangor, Central, Logan, Coulee Christian, West Salem, Luther, Onalaska, Holmen and La Crescent.
