Known for their dedication to the local community, the Kiwanis Club of Carefree is one of the largest Kiwanis clubs in the world, with roughly 150 members, according to the organization.
The organization’s focus is on helping children recognize and develop their potential. They support post-secondary scholarships, summer art programs, special needs support, youth service organizations and more.
“Our mission is to support kids in a variety of ways,” confirmed Janet Busbee, chair of the Kiwanis Carefree Scholarship Committee.
One of the ways Kiwanis does this is through an annual scholarship program for local high school seniors who are in need of funds to help with their post-secondary education.
Beginning with a single $500 scholarship awarded in 1986, the annual scholarship program has grown exponentially. This year, a record number of applications were received with over $500,000 in scholarship funds slated to be awarded to deserving students thanks to the generosity of local supporters of the Kiwanis Carefree’s annual fundraising initiatives.
These scholarships will be presented to deserving students at the Kiwanis Evening of Excellence Scholarship Ceremony that takes place at 6 p.m., Monday, May 6 at Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center, located at 33606 N. 60th Street in Scottsdale. The annual event is open to the students’ family and friends as well as community members.
“The scholarship program is special because it’s a way to invest in our future and help talented, dedicated students pursue their education and dreams beyond high school,” Busbee said. “The youth who are students now will be leading the country in the future.”
Busbee added that the scholarship ceremony is a rewarding event to attend.
“The annual Kiwanis Evening of Excellence Scholarship Ceremony is an excellent way to honor students who have worked hard and have a vision for their future,” she said. “It’s a worthwhile, feel-good event to attend that is uplifting and hopeful.”
“This event honors excellence not just academics and these deserving students are exceptional in a variety of ways,” she continued. “This year’s keynote speaker is also dynamic and uplifting.”
The keynote speaker, Ryan Harris, is a 10-year NFL veteran, playing for the Denver Broncos (who he went to the Super Bowl with in 2015), Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers. He is also the author of “Mindset for Mastery, An NFL Champion’s Guide to Reaching Your Greatness.”
Harris said that he looks forward to sharing hard-earned insights about finding and celebrating the greatness that is within each of the scholarship winners. The families and friends in attendance will hear how anyone wanting to achieve their goals can reach their full potential.
For those looking to help Kiwanis Club of Carefree continue to support local youth, Busbee said that locals can donate directly to the organization’s scholarship fund or donate items and shop at the Kiwanis Marketplace Thrift Store. They also always welcome new members and volunteers both for the club and the thrift store.
“As an organization, we are so thankful for the community’s support,” she said. “We couldn’t do this without them.”
