MASSAC COUNTY — Over the last 39 years, parents, family, friends, teachers and the community have gathered for one night to honor those students who have participated in academic competitions throughout the school year.
The 40th annual Massac County Academic Awards Night is coming up in two weeks.
Students from Joppa High School and Massac County High School will be recognized at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at the Metropolis Community Center.
The ceremony is supported and organized jointly by the Metropolis Kiwanis Club and the high schools. The steering committee is comprised of Kiwanians, high school faculty who serve as sponsors for academic teams and high school guidance counselors.
Each year, the ceremony also features guest speakers who have either benefited from or helped organize the event in the past.
A highlight of the evening is the awarding of scholarships to seniors from those teams. Student scholarship winners are determined by a review of applications and final determination is made by judges affiliated with the Southern Illinois Community Foundation (SICF).
Since 1986, scholarships totaling $540,050 have been awarded to 515 students. These students have used these funds to go to college where many graduate and go on to hold responsible and respectable positions in the Massac County community, as well as across the United States and abroad.
These scholarship funds are made available from money donated by local businesses, civic organizations and individuals through their annual contributions, and also through the annual Metropolis Kiwanis Scholarship Spaghetti Supper & Silent Auction.
This year’s supper and auction was held Saturday, March 29, at the Massac Junior High School. The evening netted $15,500.
Tax deductible donations to the Massac Academic Ceremony are accepted year round. They can be made online at www.sicf.org/MCASF. Donors will receive recognition for their contributions in the official awards program.
