Jessica Knott of Paris was awarded the Morrelle Miller Rousie Scholarship on April 15 by the Tennessee Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Knott will graduate from Henry County High School this month. She plans to attend the University of Tennessee at Knoxville this fall, where she will major in biology with a concentration in pre-medicine as a prerequisite for admission to the UT College of Medicine in Memphis. She plans to become a physician and provide health care for the people of Tennessee.
Knott’s scholarship application was endorsed by the UDC Chapter 2521 of Paris and submitted by Tina Cain-Cavitt, the chapter’s second vice president, registrar and historian.
According to the local chapter, Knott’s exceptional grade point average, advanced college coursework and many high school, church, and community activities qualified her for the Tennessee Division Scholarship. The scholarship offers $ 1,000 a year and can be renewed for each of the subsequent three years as long as a 3.0 GPA is maintained.
Among the high school activities she participates in are the National Honor Society, Rho Kappa honors society, Leo Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Rock On, Family Career and Community Leaders and Future Educators of America.
She attends First Baptist Church of Paris, where she participates in the church orchestra and the youth band, as well as intramural sports including ultimate frisbee and volleyball.
Knott also performs community service work through her church, the Paris Lions Club and Second Harvest food pantry.
She works at Knott’s Fine Foods, the food services company her family has owned in Paris for more than 75 years.
