Ku Stevens presents college scholarship to two Reno high school runners – Reno Gazette Journal
For the third year in a row, a couple of local runners and recent high school graduates received the $1,000 Ku Stevens Legacy Scholarship.
The scholarship, presented Monday, is awarded annually to one female and one male athlete of “outstanding athleticism in the field of running, exemplary character, and exceptional academic record with a GPA of 3.4 and above.”
This year’s recipients are Kambri Felsted from Spanish Springs High School and Anthony Sharp from Damonte Ranch High School.
Stevens was the Gatorade Runner of the Year in Nevada in 2022, and has used the award money to create the scholarship to help other runners attend college.
Stevens hosted the annual 50-mile Remembrance Run, held in honor of the survivors of Native American boarding schools and in memory of those children who didn’t make it home. He is the subject of the documentary film “Remaining Native.”
“It seems like it went by so fast, in a blink of an eye” Stevens said of his high school running career. “It’s nice that we can do this each year to ground me again and to reminisce that I did have a pretty good career and I’m still able to impact people today.”
Felsted, who plans on attending Brigham Young University, said she hopes “to continue making waves with what Ku has started by leaving a good legacy for other people and pay it forward and help others as much as possible.”
Sharp plans to attend St. Mary’s College of California.
“I feel like this is a really prestigious scholarship because of the legacy that (Ku) has,” he said. “This will help a lot because I come from a low-income household and I’m a first generation student, so this means a lot to me.”
