Members of the La Crescenta Woman’s Club (LCWC) rolled out the red carpet for 15 local high school students who received a total of $14,000 in scholarship funds. On April 9 LCWC members also played host to elected political representatives. Maria Sosyan attended as a representative of Congressmember Laura Friedman. Diana Oganesyan was there, representing Los Angeles Supervisor Kathryn Barger. Crescenta Town Council members present were Dede Mueller and Jeffrey Rodriguez. The representatives and Town Council members presented certificates to the scholarship winners.
Debra Landau, Scholarship Committee Chairperson, opened the program by introducing the scholarship recipients. From Crescenta Valley High School are Charlie Allen, Vela Benedicto, Evan Choi, Josephine Isaean, Abigail Hawrylo, June Jeon, Alice Johnson, Jasper Kugler, Alina Samsonyan, Hazel Banul, Barden Willits, Hannah Yi and Lily Zou. From Village School is Jacob Curtis. Sophie Dadikozian is a student at Anderson W. Clark Magnet High School.
CV High School Senior Alice Johnson said she applied for a scholarship because her mother, Yuki Johnson, is a member of the CVWC evening program. Her scholarship is worth $1,500.
“I’m honored to have witnessed how hard the CVWC have worked,” she said. Johnson will be attending the University of California, Davis. She will major in managerial economics.
CVWC Co-Presidents Mary Nolte and Carol Stein thanked their audience for attending. They also announced that Club members will have the opportunity to attend the May 4 Sunday matinee of “The Secret Comedy of Women” at the Colony Theatre in Burbank.
Following was lunch and dessert hosted by Lori Kim and Landau.
Scholarship Committee member and past president Danette Erickson said, “Roberta Kurtz started our scholarship program with an endowment. Since then others have given us endowments as well, so we give the interest earned to deserving high school graduates. Our bingo and other fundraisers plus rentals add to help us give many more scholarships, thanks to our community’s generosity.”
