LA MARQUE
After helping lead the La Marque Cougars boys basketball team to the program’s fourth-ever state semifinal, Jasiya Johnson is set to take on the next challenge of collegiate basketball, signing Wednesday with the Shoreline Community College Dolphins.
“It means a lot,” said Johnson, a 6-foot-2 guard whose senior-year accolades included Galveston County player of the year, District 29-4A most valuable player and Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 4A all-state. “I can’t wait to get better. As my mom would say, this is not the best version of me, so I can’t wait to elevate on a new level.”
“We’re a family, and he’s going to be really missed,” La Marque head boys basketball coach Kevin Wilcox said. “This kid really exemplifies La Marque basketball in the fullest capacity.”
A well-rounded player and strong finisher at the basket with solid numbers — 15.6 points per game, 5.5 assists per game, 5.4 rebounds per game, 3.2 steals per game and 1.2 blocks per game — last season, Johnson said it was his ability to be coachable that was key to him attracting a scholarship offer from Shoreline, which is located just outside of Seattle.
“I’m a little bit nervous about it, but it’s a part of the story,” Johnson said. “Wherever God takes me, I’m ready.”
