CADILLAC — A 17-year-old Lake City graduate is looking to purse a law career due to her family’s history in the field but also for her love of debating.
For that reason and more, Camille Mitchell was selected as the student to receive a $1,000 scholarship from the William R. Peterson Scholarship Committee.
This fall, she will enroll in a Pre-Law track at Alma College in Alma and plans to study political science and philosophy. Although she has yet to start her college career, Mitchell said after she gets her degree she plans on attending law school but is uncertain about which one.
Before she was given the scholarship Monday, a brief ceremony was held in the 28th Circuit Court Courtroom with Judge Jason Elmore providing a few remarks and he gave a brief historical perspective about former Judge William Peterson.
After the brief ceremony, Mitchell talked about her choice of choosing a career in law and becoming an attorney.
“I really like helping people and I know a lot of people who say they like helping people go more the medical route, but I was like I can’t deal with all that. I head all the stuff med students have to go through,” she said. “I was like, Ooh that is not my route so then I shifted my focus toward law because my family has history in law. Then I found it was like debate and I love debating, Just ask my mom.”
The Peterson Scholarship was established by the Wexford/Missaukee Bar Association in 1994. It was established as a tribute to Peterson and honors all deceased members of the Wexford/Missaukee Bar. It is intended for qualified high school graduates attending college and majoring in history, political science or pre-law.
The scholarship was established through donations from attorneys and other individuals throughout northwest Michigan. It also includes donations made in memory of other Cadillac citizens. This is the 27th year for the scholarship.
Information about the scholarship fund is available by contacting the Wexford/ Missaukee Bar Association, William R. Peterson Scholarship Fund, 120 West Harris St., Cadillac, MI 49601 or calling (231) 775-1391.
