Lakeland High School Celebrates 2 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists – Patch

SHRUB OAK, NY — Two exceptional local high school seniors were named among an elite group of scholars nationwide.

The 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program has named two Lakeland High School students Semifinalists. Justine Tang and Sean Kowatch are among the top 1 percent of the nation’s graduating Class of 2026 based on their outstanding academic achievement and performance on the PSAT/NMSQT. They now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships which are announced next spring.

“We are incredibly proud of Justine and Sean,” said Principal Chris Cummings. “Their dedication, hard work, and commitment to excellence exemplify the values of Lakeland. We’re excited to see all that they will accomplish in the future.”
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) is a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. It was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
