Lampkin’s Legacy Carries on Through Swim Scholarship – KCII Radio

The legacy of a Washington man who won state swimming championships and held a collegiate backstroke record is being carried forward with scholarships to teach area youth how to swim. A swim lesson scholarship has been announced at the Washington YMCA in tribute to Larry Lampkin.
Washington YMCA CEO Amy Schulte shares that after Lampkin passed away last year, the family approached the YMCA about providing funds to the swimming program because it meant so much to him growing up. The memorial funds have been earmarked to provide full scholarships for swimming lessons for children who meet the scholarship guidelines. Those receiving the scholarships do not need to be a member of the Y to apply.
Schulte shared with KCII News, “We are so grateful to the Lampkin family for this gift and hope this program will spark a passion for swimming in the children that it serves.”
Lampkin learned how to swim at the Washington YMCA. He won three consecutive state championships in the pool in 1966, 1967, and 1968. He went on to swim at the collegiate level at the University of Northern Iowa and set the school’s record in the backstroke – a record that stood for two decades. He was invited to try out for the 1972 U.S. Olympic swim team.
Those interested in learning to swim and wanting to learn more about the scholarship should contact the YMCA. The funds donated will help over 30 children learn how to swim. The Y is accepting donations towards the program to help even more children.
