LAPEER — The Lapeer Odd Fellows Lodge 94 each week hosts bingo games at its downtown Lapeer hall on West Nepessing Street. Proceeds support an annual presentation of scholarship to graduating seniors from Almont, Dryden, Imlay City, Lapeer and North Branch high schools.
Thursday evening, graduates and their families were treated to a taco dinner. Afterward, the students were given their scholarships.
The scholarship recipients included Michael Brownrigg, Victor Brownrigg, Zoe Patrick, Bailey Allen, Antoinette Bailey, Chase Jackson, Elijah Burlack, Liam Oliver, Josie Oliver, Chandler Nash, Ryan Hintz, Trinity Sollman, Lucas McLaren, Noah Hall and Mason Howe.
The Lapeer Odd Fellows, chartered in 1866, have presented scholarships since 1985 — handing out nearly $500,000 to help area students pay for college and university tuition. The fraternal organization is dedicated to community service, charity and fellowship. Also associated with the Odd Fellows in Lapeer is the Maine Rebekah Lodge 317, that also presented a scholarship on Thursday.
The Odd Fellows this week awarded five scholarships and 11 endowments.
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) has a long history of promoting community service and mutual aid. It’s known for its motto, “Visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan.” The IOOF also emphasizes friendship, love, and truth and aims to improve the character of its members and make the world a better place.
The IOOF was founded in England in the 18th century, with the name “Odd Fellows” given because the founders were considered unusual for their focus on helping others. The first U.S. lodge was established in Baltimore in 1819.
The Lapeer Odd Fellows host Lapeer Masonic Lodge bingo Tuesday evenings starting at 7:30 p.m., while the Odd Fellows bingo night is Friday — also starting at 7:30 p.m. Early bird action starts at 7 p.m. Both bingo nights are open to the public.
Entrance to the Odd Fellows Hall in downtown Lapeer is on the Clay Street (south) side of the building. The hall is located on the second floor of the building. An elevator is available.
