CADILLAC — Lake City’s Sadie Larson and Reed City’s Gus Rohde had pretty special days at the 52nd annual Cadillac News Track and Field Meet on Monday.
A day later, they got some pretty good news to follow it up.
They are the female and male winners of the scholarship from the meet and each will receive $3,000 toward their college education.
Funds for the scholarships come from gate receipts and advertising in the program handed out at the event.
The scholarships are based on News Meet performance, academic performance, school involvement and community involvement.
Larson won the long jump Monday with a personal-best leap of 16-feet, 10-inches; took first in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.65 seconds and took first in the 300 hurdles in 46.79 seconds.
“I am pretty happy to win it,” Larson said of the scholarship. “I kind of forgot about it until the end of the meet (Monday).
“I think it well very well for me and I was very glad to get the times I got. I didn’t think was going to get a 46 in the 300, either. I was very happy with all of my events and really proud of myself.”
Larson graduated from Lake City High School recently with 3.25 GPA, finishing her junior and senior year’s on the school’s honor roll. She volunteered in community events like the Lake City Athletics Booster 5k and 10K; and helping Special Olympics athletes train on Saturday mornings.
Larson will attend Ferris State University beginning in the fall and will be a member of the Bulldogs’ women’s track and field team.
Rohde added his name to the Cadillac News Meet record books in a second event after he already held the top mark in the 800. He won the Paul McMullen Memorial 1,600-meter run in a record time of 4:19.41, breaking the mark of 4:20.57 set by Manton’s Noah Morrow in 2021.
He also ran a leg of the Coyotes’ 1600 relay that took first in 3:33.22 with Kason Coppick, Andrew Kiaunis and Paul Saladin.
“I think this is pretty special knowing that there were a lot of really good athletes that could have won it,” Rohde said. “It’s flattering that I was chosen as the boys’ winner.”
As far as the day itself, Rohde to have one last meet with his teammates in the area before Saturday’s MHSAA Division 3 State Finals at Kent City.
“The whole team did really well and it was great to spend the day with them one last time,” he said.
Rohde graduated from Reed Cith with a 4.00 GPA and score of 1280 on the SAT.
He has been awarded Male Senior Athlete of the Year, two-time academic dream team, vice president of the school’s National Honor Society and accumulated more than 100 hours of community service.
Rohde and two of his classmates started a Veterans Appreciation Committee to help raise money to recognize local veterans and raise awareness about veteran suicide.
He will attend Michigan State University in the fall and will be a member of the Spartans’ mens’ cross country and track programs.
