STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Lathrope Voorspuy Memorial Scholarship Fund is accepting applications for its scholarship award.
The fund, which was founded by board president Cindy Voorspuy in memory of her late mother, Lathrope Keen Baker Voorspuy, aims to motivate and inspire young activists, specifically those interested in social justice, economic issues, environmental studies, community activism and future political involvement.
After the late Voorspuy moved to New Brighton, she wasted no time involving herself in any local politics and activities she could find. She joined the Staten Island Democratic Association and became captain of the 14th Election District of the 59th Assembly District and was elected to the Democratic County Committee. The Staten Island Democratic Association later awarded her with the Peggy Johnston Club Service Award in 1995.
“The society is ultimately a group effort between the board, and they know how much this means to me. This is a place to honor her life and legacy to what she loved most: activism. She was active in the civil rights and women’s movements in the late ‘60s,” said Cindy Voorspuy.
The board encourages middle and high school students to apply for the scholarship, but the award is open to all ages.
The application consists of a one-page written essay responding to questions provided by the society. Applicants can choose from a list of several programs, including the Elenora Roosevelt Legacy and The Midwest Academy. If an applicant finds a program not on the list, he or she can propose it to the board’s consideration.
The grant amount is determined by the tuition and program to which the applicant applies. The award ranges from a couple hundred dollars to $2,000.
To submit an application, visit the LVMSF website, download and fill out the PDF, and return it by email or mail. The deadline to apply is Feb. 28, 2025.
