The Valley Patriot’s 21st Anniversary BASH was held on Friday, March 28th at the Lawrence Elks Club attracting a crowd of more than 500 people to watch 7 local students receive a total of $67,291.
Among the seven scholarships handed out was the Eugene Smith, John Ratka Memorial Scholarship for Lawrence High School JrROTC commander Jayhronnie Ferran.
His family came to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic. Jayhronnie was born and grew up in Lawrence with a passion for computer science to create applications to make everyday tasks more easy.
He founded 2 robotic teams through JrROTC and the Youth Development organization, spends his summers attending classes at Phillips Academy in Andover to get ahead of his regular course classes and has maintained a 3.0 grade point average.
Jayhronnie says he wants to join the ROTC program in college and graduate as a second lieutenant for the United States Army!
In his free time, he likes to knit, explore different places in Lawrence, and practice marching movements with his Drill Team cadets!
Jayhronnie has been accepted at Merrimack College, UMASS Boston & The Virginia Military Institute. He is still waiting to hear back from a couple other schools and hasn’t picked a school to attend yet.
