The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced this year’s winners of $2,500 scholarships, including La Cañada High School student Zoe Petropoulos.
“I was super happy to be awarded the scholarship, which will help cover the cost of tuition,” Petropoulos told the Outlook Valley Sun.
Petropoulos was a finalist, along with six other LCHS students, who were judged on their accomplishments, skills and potential success in collage.
Selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, Petropoulos is part of a rare group of seniors receiving the scholarship.
Students had to submit their academic record, scores from preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, note contributions and leadership in school and community activities, submit an essay and a recommendation written by a high school official.
Petropoulos first heard about the scholarship when remembering previous LCHS students being recognized as finalists.
During her high school career, Petropoulos has been part of the Omid for Girls club, played on the junior varsity and varsity soccer team and been part of the International Space Academy program and Scouting America. She was engaged in the martial art, Hapkido.
This year’s National Merit Scholarship Program began in October 2023, when high school juniors went through an initial screening of testing and were named semifinalists based on their score.
From that group, over 15,000 students met the “very high academic standards” and other requirements to advance to the finalist level.
Petropoulos is excited for her new chapter of life and will attend Cornell University in the fall and study mechanical engineering.
“By the conclusion of the 2025 program, more than 6,930 finalists will have earned the ‘Merit Scholar’ title and received a total of nearly $26 million in college scholarships,” according to a press release from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was founded in 1955 specifically to conduct the National Merit Scholarship Program.
The majority of scholarships offered each year are underwritten by approximately 280 independent corporate and college sponsors that share NMSC’s goals of honoring scholastically talented youth and encouraging academic excellence at all levels of education.
