HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — When you think of college scholarships, academics and athletics usually come to mind — but at Lee High School Wednesday evening, it was all about the music.
The school hosted its first-ever Band Signing Day, celebrating 12 students from the marching band who secured more than $750,000 in band scholarships and over $850,000 in academic awards.
“It feels amazing,” said senior drum major Jael Michaels. “Not even just at football games. We participate in so many parades… and I just feel like we should be getting the recognition we deserve, and we finally are.”
Michaels credits the band program with providing more than just musical training.
“It’s given me family. That is our motto here. Family. Like, it might sound corny, but it is literally what it is. Everybody’s my backbone,” she said.
Band director Reginald Pearson emphasized the importance of recognizing students’ dedication to music.
“These students’ talents should be recognized. They put in countless hours of practice. It’s so many different things,” Pearson said. “And so now we get an opportunity to formally tell them thank you.”
The event mirrors the traditional signing days held for student-athletes, providing band members with similar recognition for their musical achievements.
