In a powerful tribute to the legacy of writer, activist, and cultural icon James Baldwin, The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute is proud to announce the launch of the James Baldwin Scholarship—a new initiative designed to uplift and support Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) actors.
The scholarship honors Baldwin’s groundbreaking contributions to literature, civil rights, and the arts, as well as his collaboration with Lee Strasberg in staging Blues for Mister Charlie during the Civil Rights Movement. Rooted in the belief that diverse voices strengthen the creative landscape, this scholarship provides critical financial support to emerging BIPOC actors who exhibit exceptional talent, passion, and dedication to their craft.
The James Baldwin Scholarship provides a tuition award of $10,900, covering three 12-Week Part-Time (10 hours) terms of study at The Institute’s Los Angeles campus. In alignment with Baldwin’s family’s wishes, the scholarship amount reflects the legacy of his nine siblings who carried his name and memory forward.
More than just financial assistance, this scholarship is a commitment to empowering BIPOC artists who are actively creating work. The Institute will work closely with each recipient to tailor their enrollment to their artistic goals, ensuring that this opportunity aligns with their creative journey. Scholarship recipients have up to 12 months to begin their studies.

How to Apply
Applications for the Spring 2025 James Baldwin Scholarship open in January 2025 and close on February 28th. Two scholarships will be awarded each year—one for Spring enrollment and one for Fall—considering both artistic potential and financial need.
