The non-profit Equal Protection Project of the Legal Insurrection Foundation has filed a civil rights complaint against Bowling Green State University “for discrimination in twenty-four (24) scholarships” in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Title IX, respectively.”
All but one of the scholarships targeted are aimed at women, though most state that the preference is for a female candidate, not a requirement.
They include the University Women Non-Traditional Award According to the document submitted by the complainant, the application states: “Recipient must be a non-traditional female student, defined as 25 years of age or older.”
Others, however, such as the scholarship created by BGSU trustee Amy T. Shore state that “preference will be given to a female student.”
One of the challenged scholarships is the Wiley Blevins “Educator of Promise” Scholarship which has a preference for male students majoring in elementary education.
All, these the Equal Protection Project claims, violate government law because they discriminate on the basis of sex.
BGSU stated that the university has not been contacted by the Department of Education on this matter.
“BGSU is continuing to work diligently to respond to the rapidly changing guidance and laws coming from multiple directions for higher education. We are continuing our work to ensure compliance with all federal and state laws and executive orders,” the university’s statement read. “We remain committed to ensuring all students have access to a high quality, affordable education where they are supported in successfully earning their degree.”
The Rhode Island-based Legal Insurrection Foundation blog was launched in 2008 by Cornell Law Professor William A. Jacobson.
The foundation claims that through diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts and critical race theory “objective meritocracy is being shunned and ignored.”
