The Lenoir Hospital Foundation recently provided financial support through scholarships to seven people.
The scholarships will help recipients they pursue their healthcare careers and personal growth, said Beverly Jenkins, UNC Health Lenoir director of marketing, community relations and medical staff development.
April Wurdock, UNC Health Lenoir director of Health Information Services, received the Gary E. Black Memorial Impact Award. The award was created last year to memorialize Lenoir Memorial Hospital CEO Gary Black, who worked for the hospital 32 years.
Wurdock is the second person to ever receive the award and she will use it toward professional development in patient safety, Jenkins said.
Haylee Butts, a nursing student at Pitt Community College, received the Jamie C. Fields Memorial Nursing Scholarship.
The scholarship provides financial assistance to an employee or to the son or daughter of an employee of UNC Health Lenoir, who is actively enrolled in a college or community college program to obtain a nursing degree, Jenkins said.
Cassie Royster, a nursing student at Lenoir Community College, was awarded the Stackhouse Memorial Nursing Scholarship.
Franchesca King and Isabella Norris, students in the Lenoir Community College Radiography Program, were awarded the Nancy Peel Memorial Scholarship.
It is awarded to students who are enrolled in either radiology or laboratory programs, Jenkins said.
Angela Duran, a nursing student at Pitt Community College, received the Cindy A. Jones Memorial Nursing Scholarship. The scholarship is intended to help pay for non-tuition expenses.
Rachel Garris was awarded the Ella Green Weyher National Nursing Certification Scholarship. The scholarship serves to promote professional nursing certification of UNC Health Lenoir nurses.
A national certification benefits nurses, patients, and the organization by validating expertise, increasing nursing credibility, and promoting professional development. Two of these scholarships are awarded each year, one in the spring and one in the fall, Jenkins said.
The Lenoir Hospital Foundation was established more than 35 years ago to receive and steward private donations for the purpose of enhancing patient care through support to UNC Health Lenoir.
