Regan Lane is graduating high school with more than just top marks — she’s walking away with one of Canada’s most coveted scholarships.
The 17-year-old L’Essor Secondary School student has been named a Schulich leader, earning a $100,000 award to support her studies in mathematical physics at Queen’s University in the fall.
“I was so shocked, I couldn’t speak,” Lane told the Star. “I didn’t think that it was real. When I looked at my phone and I saw the email that I won — I was stunned.

“I called my parents and we cried. It was very emotional.”
Lane is one of 100 teens selected across the country for the prestigious scholarship, which recognizes academic excellence, leadership, and passion for STEM fields — science, technology, engineering, and math.
She stood out among nominees for both her academic record and community involvement. Lane maintained a 98 per cent average while studying French, despite being raised in an English-speaking household.
“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had at L’Essor and within the Csc (Conseil scolaire catholique) Providence,” Lane said. “The school community has been incredibly supportive, and I’m proud to represent the strength and worth of French-language education as a Schulich leader.”
At school, Lane co-captained the volleyball team, swam competitively, and took part in the environment club, debate team, and morning announcements — all while lending her time to volunteer efforts.
“One of the most memorable moments will be my time on the volleyball team here at L’Essor,” said Lane. “There’s a really amazing program here and so many of the girls pushed me really hard. It was really awesome and we had a lot of fun playing together.”
Outside the classroom, Lane leads a youth program at her church, volunteers at the University of Windsor’s human kinetics lab, and works as a certified lifeguard and swim instructor for the Municipality of Lakeshore.
“Regan’s accomplishments reflect her determination, commitment, and excellence — qualities we deeply value in our schools,” Michael Castellano, principal of École secondaire catholique L’Essor, said in a news release.
“She embodies the mission of the Csc Providence: to shape engaged leaders who are rooted in their culture and open to the world.”
Through the Schulich Foundation, prestigious entrance scholarships were awarded to 100 high school graduates enrolling in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics undergraduate program at 20 partner universities in Canada this year. Half are valued at $120,000 for engineering scholarships and half are valued at $100,000 for science and math scholarships.
Every high school in Canada can submit one Schulich Leader Nominee per academic year based on academic excellence in STEM, entrepreneurial leadership and financial need.
