Scholarship recipients recognized by the Arlington Heights Memorial Library Foundation.
The Arlington Heights Memorial Library Foundation recently announced the winners of its 2025 scholarship for Dist. 214 students who aspire to attend trade school. This is the third year the foundation has offered this scholarship, and the number of submissions was higher than ever.
“We’ve seen so many young makers take advantage of the library’s Makerplace, and we hope to encourage those individuals to channel their passion into a career in the trades,” said Lauree Harp, founder and chair of the foundation. “We are honored to be a part of these bright students’ future and are grateful to everyone who has donated to our scholarship fund in the last few years.”
This year’s winners include four graduates from Dist. 214 schools.
Daniel Vivas, winner of the Jeffrey P. Moroney Scholarship, is a student at Buffalo Grove High School and is preparing to launch a career as an HVAC technician through Harper College.
Milosz Szafranski, winner of the Hartnett Family Scholarship, is a John Hersey High School senior who will continue his welding education at Harper College next year.
Angel Basilio is a student at Wheeling High School who will use the scholarship to earn his EMT certificate to become a firefighter.
Lastly, Blake Rueffer, a student at Prospect High School, is preparing to study Plumbing and Pipe Fitting at Harper College.
The foundation, which supports the Arlington Heights Memorial Library and Makerplace, aims to inspire and promote education in skilled trades through its scholarship offerings. This year, the foundation awarded four scholarships, each valued at $2,500. Among these were scholarships funded by friends and family of the late Arlington Heights resident and maker Jeffrey Moroney and the Hartnett Family Scholarship, sponsored by John Hartnett, a former member of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library Foundation Board.
These scholarships were available to Dist. 214 students and alumni aged 17 to 25 who are interested in pursuing careers in skilled trades that require advanced training other than a four-year bachelor’s degree. Eligible fields include plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, HVAC, machining, welding, cosmetology, and more.
The foundation will begin accepting applications for the 2026 scholarship in March of next year.
