LIMA, OH (WLIO) – For the second year, Lima Memorial Health System awarded full-ride scholarships to local nursing students.
Seven students were selected from the ten-county area to receive money to fully fund their tuition and textbook costs. With this year’s scholarship winners, the Lima Memorial Auxiliary has now funded the education of 25 future nurses. The recipients will be working at the hospital while they’re earning their degrees and certifications, and they’ll be hired full-time when they graduate. The scholarship program is about investing in both students’ futures and community healthcare.
“They’re going to graduate, become a registered nurse, or an LPN, a licensed practical nurse, and it’s going to be debt-free for them. And again, the importance of keeping them in the community is the goal for us and obviously a goal for them,” said Patti Bauchom, senior HR business partner at Lima Memorial Health System.
“We have too many kids that go to college at various universities and move to other states, and we need them in our community. There is a need here for a lot of the personnel—doctors, nurses,” commented Dave Harsh, president of the Lima Memorial Auxiliary.
One of the winners this year is resuming her degree after spending some time at a monastery before deciding that the healthcare industry is where she belongs.
“I wanted to kind of start over with nursing because it was a passion that I had in my heart. I just love taking care of people, and I feel like the best way I can do that is helping people when they’re in their most vulnerable moments—at the hospital, when they don’t know what’s coming next,” stated Emma Delong, Lima Central Catholic Class of 2021 and full-ride scholarship winner.
This year’s scholarship recipients are Miah Binkley, Braya Blair, Cori Crawford, Emma Delong, Caitlyn Purvenas, Kiersten Sheridan, and Karlie Wallace.
April 25, 2024, Press Release from Lima Memorial Health System: A special signing ceremony for LMHS Scholarship Program recipients was held on Thursday, April 25, in Lima Memorial’s Welcome Center. Scholarship recipients Miah Binkley, Braya Blair, Cori Crawford, Emma Delong, Caitlyn Purvenas, Kiersten Sheridan and Karlie Wallace were in attendance, as well as Lima Memorial associates who will work alongside these students at Lima Memorial Health System while they earn their registered nursing credentials.
Funding for the scholarships was made possible by the unwavering generosity of the Lima Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. At the end of 2023, the Auxiliary donated $100,000 to the Lima Memorial Foundation, culminating year-long fundraising activities. This donation was designated for health care career scholarships for the LMHS Scholarship Program. The scholarships presented to recipients on Thursday provides full coverage of tuition and books.
Lima Memorial established the LMHS Scholarship Program to promote the education and training of local students to become skilled health care providers. While completing their formal education, scholarship recipients will be employed at LMHS, filling critical roles as they embark on their career progression to become registered nurses.
