The Sanford Lions Club recently announced the recipients of its annual memorial scholarships.
This year, high school students from Lee County were selected: Yoel Cruz, Raymond Knotts, Kara Savage and Cameron Collins.
“We are thrilled the Lions Club is able to give these scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each,” said David Gercken, chairman of the scholarship committee.
Students were selected based on their financial need, academic performance and extracurricular activities.
The scholarship funds, which can be used for tuition, fees, books and living expenses, are sent directly to the student’s chosen college at the start of their freshman year.
Cruz, a graduate of Grace Christian School, plans to study exercise science at the University of South Carolina. His goal is to become a physician assistant or medical doctor. He is the son of Joel and Evelin Cruz.
Knotts, a graduate of Lee County High School, will attend Ferrum College to study business administration. He hopes to play in the NFL before joining his family’s business, Knotts Funeral Home. He is the son of Angela Minnick.
Savage, a graduate of Lee County High School, plans to earn a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is the daughter of Jason and Jamie Savage.
Collins, a graduate of Southern Lee High School, will be attending North Carolina State University. She is the daughter of Brandon and Kelly Collins.
