Metropolis Lions Club president Maxine Russell presented scholarships to Massac County High School seniors Kamille Sparks, Cooper Stratemeyer, Wilson Hawes and Ethan Goines on Thursday, April 24, during the 2025 Academic Awards Ceremony.
The Metropolis Lions Club presented four scholarships during the 2025 Academic Awards Ceremony on Thursday, April 24.
Through roadblocks and other fundraisers the club was able to provide $500 scholarships to Kamille Sparks, Wilson Hawes, Ethan Goines and Cooper Stratemeyer.
This is the third year the club has presented the scholarship, which is open to Massac County High School seniors who must complete an application and submit an essay about their future plans, how the scholarship will help achieve those goals and how their career choice will impact the Massac County community.
“We try to focus on serving the community as that is the motto of the Lions Club — ‘We Serve,’” said Russell. “Each year, we try to get students who have contributed to the community and have served in some capacity and given back to the community.”
Goines is the son of Jason and Lynn Goines of Metropolis. He will be attending the University of Kentucky Paducah Campus, Pigman College of Engineering.
Hawes is the son of Doug and Becky Hawes of Metropolis. He will be attending University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Stratemeyer is the son of Josh and Molly Stratemeyer of Metropolis. He will be attending Union University in Jackson, Tennessee.
Sparks is the daughter of John and Sherell Sparks of Metropolis. She will be attending Shawnee Community College.
Lions Club members Ciindy Broderdorp, Sarah Crim and Bobby Crim were also at the presentation.
Russell noted that the scholarships are made possible by the generosity of the community during the club’s roadblocks. “Thank you for your participation. Whatever you have, a dollar or change, all adds up and goes for a great cause,” she said.
The club’s next roadblock will be Saturday, May 31.
