Aspiring writers have a resource to help them develop their craft and advance a career through a scholarship program administered by Literary Cleveland.
Literary Cleveland is a nonprofit organization and creative writing center that empowers people to explore other voices and create their own, according to the organization’s website.
Literary Cleveland makes its programming and classes accessible to writers, regardless of their financials by offering Word for Word Scholarships.
These scholarships, established in 2023, are funded by grants, private donations, voluntary contributions from people who register for the classes each semester and from the organization’s annual fundraiser each June, its largest, called “A Lit Summer Night.”
About two-thirds of the scholarships are funded through grants and about one-third through donations, according to Matt Weinkam, executive director of Literary Cleveland.
Through these donations, Literary Cleveland is able to offer a limited number of scholarships for its classes and workshops, said Michelle Smith, program director for Literary Cleveland.
These scholarships allow low- and limited-income writers at least 18 years old and residing in Northeast Ohio to enroll in classes at a reduced cost or at no cost.
Between 50 and 75 scholarships are awarded each semester, according to Smith. Since January 2023, more than 430 scholarships have been awarded, she added.
Scholarship applications open in November for January to April classes, in March for May to August classes, and in July for September to December classes.
In the current summer semester that began in May and ends in August, there are 403 students registered and 54 are on scholarship, according to Smith.
Literary Cleveland is finalizing class offerings for this year’s final semester as well as a class schedule.
Scholarship applications for the final semester are expected to open about Aug. 1 and will be awarded leading up to the first day of classes for the final semester of the year starting in September, Smith said.
A majority of Literary Cleveland’s classes are presented virtually, but some in-person classes are offered at the organization’s offices at 13002 Larchmere Blvd., in Cleveland, or at Lakewood United Methodist Church at 15700 Detroit Ave. in Lakewood.
Classes vary by length and duration each semester, but are typically two hours each for six sessions, but some are as few as four sessions or as many as 10 sessions during a semester, according to Smith.
The staff at Literary Cleveland also instructs at colleges and universities, including Case Western Reserve University, Kent State University, Cleveland State University and Oberlin College, according to Smith.
While most instructors at Literary Cleveland are professors at a college or university or hold at least a bachelor’s degree, it is not a requirement, according to Smith.
“We don’t require a degree (but) otherwise look for our instructors to have an equivalency that could include being a published author or writer,” so as to be mentors and provide real-life direction and experience sharing to our aspiring writers, Smith said.
