CEDAR FALLS – The Lloyd Louis Bergfeld Scholarship Fund has been established with the Buchanan County Community Foundation to provide financial assistance to students pursuing careers in diesel technology or automotive technology. The scholarship will be awarded by Hawkeye Community College, with preference given to graduates of the Starmont School District.
The fund was created by Ellen Gaffney, a longtime best friend of Lloyd Bergfeld, to honor his legacy of kindness, service, and dedication to helping others. Bergfeld, who passed away in 2022, was known for his skill and dedication as a mechanic and road construction worker, as well as his service in the Korean War, where he earned two Purple Hearts.
“Lloyd was a man of few words, but people listened,” said Gaffney. “I’ve always felt we’re here to serve others, and establishing this scholarship is my way of celebrating Lloyd’s life and helping students follow in his footsteps.”
Bergfeld worked tirelessly throughout his career, earning a reputation as one of the best blade operators in the region. His expertise and pride in his craft made a lasting impact on those who knew him. Gaffney, inspired by his life and values, hopes the scholarship will remove financial barriers for students pursuing education in fields aligned with Lloyd’s work and passion.
